Downtime, Dedicated Server, Loss of OpenID
Mar 25th
Well, my shared host finally did it. On Sunday, March 21, my shared web hosting account was suspended due to high utilization. This is partly due to this blog, as well as the World of Warcraft Signature Generator. I was unable to negotiate with them to turn the site back on – they wanted me to pay an extra $130 a month for a dedicated server package. Yeah, not going to happen. Instead, I went to eSecureData and got a dedicated server from them for less than $60 a month, installed an old DirectAdmin license I had kicking around, and away we went. So the downtime everybody experienced from Sunday afternoon to sometime early Tuesday morning was due to this. We should be more stable and faster than ever now that we’re on a dedicated package.
Also, coming with the dedicated server is going to be a very low-cost web hosting service I am going to offer to help offset the costs of the dedicated server. More details on the web hosting service will come at a later date. I’ve already started working on a signup and billing panel for it, and as soon as I have that done and integrated with DirectAdmin, the details will be released.
Also, this morning I was having some major issues with the OpenID plugin for WordPress – so it is disabled until I can work the kinks out. Those of you who were logging in with OpenIDs will have to do a lost password and log in via password. However, all logins are now over HTTPS with a valid SSL certificate, so you shouldn’t have any privacy concerns.
For now, I think that’s it. Thanks to everybody (and I’m being serious here) who utilized my website enough to get me kicked off my shared host. It makes me feel all warm, fuzzy, and special inside.
MassiveLAN/JonnyFunFun.net Left 4 Dead Server
Apr 3rd
So, to help make my obsession with Left 4 Dead worse than it already is, I put up a dedicated L4D server on my server. The server has been put up as a MassiveLAN group server for all attendees and staff of MassiveLAN to battle on. So, if you’re a Left 4 Dead player, feel free to either connect directly to, or through the MassiveLAN steam group, the server: l4d.jonnyfunfun.net:27015. The server runs 24/7 and hosts only Versus mode. There are some tweaks to the config that will come down within the next few weeks, so please bear with me on that front. If anybody has any problems, complaints, or suggestions, feel free to post a comment here or send me an e-mail and I’ll see what I can work out!
We’re Now Live with Gentoo!
Feb 8th
Okay, so I broke down, and got myself that dedicated server. Good news is that I got a coupon code and got it for cheaper than I had thought! So now, we’re running live on a Gentoo Linux-powered dedicated server in some datacenter in Florida. Please note that the Subversion repositories are down, as is the Redmine project management. The Brew Place, and many things Vault Head Games, are also down for the time being. I would have probably gotten the repositories back online tonight before I threw in the towel, but ColdFusion was not being very nice to me and I had some problems in getting isolated instances of ColdFusion running with each Apache virtual host. Needless to say, the Adobe documentation when it comes to Linux is extremely poor. However, after I’m all done with this beast, we will have our own IRC server and a web server that will understand practically every modern, dynamic web language (including (but not limited to) PHP, ASP.NET, ColdFusion, Python, and Ruby). I’m strapped with time, however, but regardless, I’m working very quickly to get everything back up and running, so check back here often for updates!
Possibly Moving to a new Dedicated Server
Jan 26th
So I rarely like to ask people for money, let alone putting up a fundraiser on my website, but this time I’ve broken down. To make a long story short, I believe that I have expanded beyond the capabilities of my Virtual Private Server – let alone the fact that I’m not entirely satisfied with the performance of it. As a result, I’m pushing to move this website, the entire RicePaddy Network, as well as Vault Head Games’ (my company) many websites to a new entirely dedicated server – Gentoo-powered, of course! By doing this, I will be able to do significantly more with my hosting and I’ll be able to offer all the accomidations that I wanted the RicePaddy Network to give the public. Also, I am starting some development on a web browser-based, persistend, turn-based space strategy and conquest game. If we end up getting the funds required for a full quarter, I will switch to a dedicated server and the game, from Vault Head Games, will go public. So, without further delay – here are the details! For a full quarter of the dedicated server, the cost is approximately $149. The setup fees and fees for the additional IP addresses that I require are not included in this figure, and I plan on covering them. Here’s the deal – if I can get at least half of this figure donated, so approximately $75, I will cover the rest and we will go live with our first game! So, use the Chip-In module below, and help make the network better and bring forth a new browser-based strategy game! Also, as an added bonus, for everybody who donates – you will receive some classified perks in the game, one of which includes it being able to play the game with no advertisements (since it will be ad-sponsored)!
